Plan to Save: Reduce Food Waste

Consultation has concluded


On average, households throw away about $1500 worth of food per year. Most of this food waste is edible, which is food that could have been eaten but was thrown away in the garbage or Green Bin.

Take the Plan to Save Challenge this fall to waste less food and save more money!

Throughout the challenge, you will follow four local champions including Phil Dewar, Councillor Lisa Post, Tina Thorpe, and Sara Wicks who will share their progress on food waste reduction by posting videos on social media. Join them in following the weekly challenges that will help you plan healthy meals, shop savvy and store food wisely.

The first 100 participants will be entered in a draw to win 1 of 3 $100 gift cards to a local restaurant of choice, and will receive a kit with resources including a produce storage guide, infographics, tip sheets, and more! Participants will be contacted when kits are ready to be picked up.

The challenge will begin on September 23rd with your first activity of the week. You will also hear from your Champions on a weekly basis so stay tuned on social media and the news feed!

    Being more mindful when I shop.

    I’ve been shopping recently with in mind of what to do with the left overs (as we usually have left overs)

    And this past Went really well.

    From the material I received I realized that my family would benefit most from frequent shops throughout the week vs one BIG shop for the week.

    What a waste!!!!!

    The family throws a lot of food away, half eaten packages of cereal/cookies/crackers etc go stale before the box is finished. Fresh fruit and veggies go off before consumed, left overs some left overs get eaten for lunch other times goes in the bin as no-one really likes to eat the same thing days in a row. Its a lot of money going in the green bin over time. Oh I also love the the fruit was mushy I like hard fruit, really its still edible actually has more flavour as its ripe, better yet eat it while its still... Continue reading
